BEAUTY FROM WITHIN
While it’s logical to think that whatever we put into our bodies impacts our largest organ - our skin - but how many of us really think that way? “It’s what’s going on inside that produces what we see on the outside,’ explains naturopath Jude Eisenhuth.
Look younger for longer with these 8 TOP tips to maximize your skincare regime:
“We will slow down ageing if we limit the intake of animal protein and increase the intake of plant foods,” says Kimberley Snyder in her book The Beauty Detox Solution (Harlequin) (her A-list fans include Drew Barrymore, Olivia Wilde and Dita Von Tesse). “Think 80% beauty fruits, greens and vegetables and 20% beauty protein, carbs, starches and fats.”
Hair is made up of keratin (a kind of connective tissue) and will benefit from the minerals zinc and calcium and silica, says Jude. Supplements from deep sea cold water fish and evening primrose oil may help too.
“Sleep is frequently underrated,” adds Jude. “A good night’s rest is needed for the repair and regeneration of collagen and elastin which decrease as we get older.”
Acidic foods (think processed foods and refined sugar) make our body more sluggish says Kimberley who advises a more alkaline diet (think sprouts, greens, ripe fruits) which will aid digestion and keep skin clear. She recommends a sip of Apple Cider Vinegar before each meal as a digestive.
Our skin eliminates half a litre of water daily says Jude, so it’s critical to replace for healthy, glowing skin. “Including fresh hydrating juices gives an extra boost of nutrients and enzymes important for skin repair and regeneration.” She recommends a combo of carrot for vit A, celery and cucumber for cleansing and paw paw and pineapple for anti- inflammatory enzymes to sooth and refresh your skin.
NYC dermatologist Dr Frederick Brandt avoids gluten, sugar and white flour, which can disrupt the production of wrinkle- fighting collagen. He favours green tea, omega 3 fatty acids salmon, extra virgin olive oil and the high-protein seed Quinoa, which has a lower GI. High GI foods can slow collagen production.
Reese Witherspoon adds chlorophyll to her water when she notices a blemish developing and says it clears up in 3 days.
Reduce your intake of coffee, tea and alcohol says Jude – “they are dehydrating and inhibit the uptake of important nutrients”. Instead drink herbal teas including Hibiscus for metablism, digestion and blood pressure.
