What your 45+ hair needs to look its full + glossy best, always
Tweak just a few things in the fine + dry hair department and you’ll love the result. Sydney hairstylist Anthony Nader, who’s worked with Karlie Kloss, Gisele Bundchen and Miranda Kerr, knows our hair so well that when you sit in a chair at his salon - RAW - you leave feeling like the most glamorous woman on the planet. Here are his tips to make 45+ hair look its very best, every day:
YOUR NEXT COLOUR - Forgo the one-dimensional, full colour when you next visit the salon, and ask your hairdresser for a sprinkle of highlights around your face and part line. Still have your regular root touchup colour service by all means, but now is the time to add more sparkle. Highlights will not only make your regrowth less noticeable (winning points here) but will add more fullness which is what we all crave.
ONE-LENGTH STRANDS WILL LOOK DRAB - and lacklustre - because they add unnecessary weight to your hair shape. Ask your hairdresser for a few shorter, textural layers throughout your next cut and you’ll feel like your hair has more height and looks healthier which is vital.
DON’T OVERDOSE - on hairstyling products. The saying: “less is more’ really does apply, 100%. I always educate my salon clients to invest in one product to target the problem they most want to fix. So. say you want to give the illusion of thicker-looking hair: A medium-hold mousse/foam on damp hair will help plump up each hair strand from roots to ends. Blow dry using a medium-sized round boar bristle brush and over direct your sections when drying (not under direct), as this will give you more root lift.
LOOSEN-OFF YOUR PONYTAIL - The biggest mistake I see (all the time) are women securing their ponytails so tight that it causes hair breakage around the hairline. Unfortunately the snapped-off strands are only noticeable when they are sticking up - reaching for the sun! - and it’s far too late, the damage is done. Loosen-off your once, tightly-secured pony and opt for a softer one.
FEELING SENSITIVE? (Your scalp that is) - Treat your sensitive, dry scalp with a few drops of almond or argan oil directly on your troubled areas and leave overnight. The next morning, massage shampoo into your dry strands before lathering it and then rinse with lukewarm water. If you want to use a conditioner, but scared it will weigh down your hair, I always recommend a weightless, leave-in conditioning spray.
