SCHOOL HAIR KNOW-HOW

FOLLOW THESE HAIR TIPS FOR AN A+ SCHOOL YEAR

A stress-free, five-minute hairstyle is what’s needed during the morning rush. And if it keeps nits from finding their way onto your child’s head, even better. Put these must-have school styles on high rotation. . .

1: THE NEW PONY

Position hair into a regular pony. With the tail, divide hair into four to six sections and plait each section individually. Secure with mini elastics.

2: BALLET BUN

The trick is to use hairspray all over before you make a ponytail as this will keep hair in place and neat all day. Gather hair in a low ponytail (so a hat can still be worn), twist around into a coil, and then twist around the elastic and secure with a few bobby pins. Finish with a scrunchie.

3: THE BRAID

To get this on-trend look either part hair into two sections or do one full braid. Start at the crown and split hair into three sections. Then begin braiding, picking up hair as you go along. Even if it’s messy it can still look good!

A LICE FREE LIFE

If your child has nits, don’t panic! Reassure them that everyone gets them and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. If you have a boy and he picks up head lice fairly regularly, consider giving him a number-one buzz cut.

  1. TREAT FIRST: I love NitWits Absolute All-In-One Head Lice Solution, $22.95. Developed by mum and scientist Nadine Ismiel-Nash – her mum invented Nads hair removal – this is one of the most effective sprays for killing head lice and eggs. With a nice smell, it’s formulated with dimethicone, a silicone-based fluid that coats the lice and the eggs, killing them by asphyxiation. To use, spray over the head – paying attention to behind the ears is where nits love to hang out – and spend time massaging it into the scalp. Then rinse after 20 minutes.

  2. COMB HAIR: Regardless of the packet’s directions, always comb through with a nit comb just to be sure. Plus, you get to see what you’ve caught before you wash it off.

  3. SET REMINDER: In seven days, check the hair and repeat if necessary. Trust me when I say, set a reminder so you don’t forget or the cycle is going to start all over again.

  4. PREVENTION: Use a preventative spray each and every day, and put long hair up in a ponytail or plait, or simply keep hair short.

NOTE: I’m not paid to endorse any of these products. I only recommend what I know really works.
